We’re proud to announce the official launch of NavHyS– a project co-founded by the European Union and supported by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership-, dedicated to the deployment of liquid hydrogen in maritime applications.

On January 21-22 2025, 14 leading companies from across Europe came together at the ECOMAT Center in Bremen to kick off this ambitious initiative. By bringing together expertise from the space industry, shipbuilding, transportation, and energy and safety, NavHyS aims to advance sustainable shipping technologies and support the decarbonisation targets of the EU Green Deal in this sector.

What we’re building

NavHyS is developing an innovative below deck liquid hydrogen storage and fuel system, to be integrated in Service Operating Vessels providing maintenance for offshore wind farms. This system will be

  • Compatible with any propulsion system

  • Supplying gaseous hydrogen at 5 bar and ambient temperature

  • Producing from 500kW to 2MW.

Why it matters:

  • While liquid hydrogen is a promising alternative to traditional fuels – thanks to its significant potential to reduce carbon emissions and its high energy density – its use in long-distance shipping has been limited by one major challenge: onboard storage at cryogenic temperatures of -253°C.
  • NavHyS is directly addressing this challenge by combining cross-sector expertise to develop innovative storing technologies.

Kick-Off Highlights

  • Presentation of Work Packages – from LH2 storage design to ship integration

  • Interactive workshops to foster collaboration
  • Visits to the Ariane 6 Center and Airbus facilities

Over the next 36 months, our team will work toward key milestones to successfully develop and test the system – so stay tuned for updates! We are proud to be part of this cutting-edge project, with a great team motivated to push hydrogen innovation forward and help decarbonise the future of shipping!
